Healthy Dining is on the Menu

Looking for a place to grab a healthy bite in Newark?

There are lots of choices, from Home Grown Café, which serves such fare as organic mushroom soup, to Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen, a rustic gastro pub, to the newcomer Honeygrow, a Philadelphia-based quick casual chain that is expanding to Main Street.

“We are always looking for great locations and our real estate team saw great potential in Delaware,” says Jen Denis, Honeygrow chief brand officer and a UD graduate and First State native. “Newark, in particular, has a vibrant downtown corridor. And we do very well with people in the 18-45 range.”

Honeygrow serves healthy salads and stir fries and is a favorite with patrons who embrace vegan and/or gluten-free diets.

“We can definitely accommodate people with any food allergy,” Denis says.

University of Delaware Dining Services now offers meat-free meals daily. UD is supporting Meatless Mondays by increasing awareness of plant-based meal options on campus. Meat still will be available, although patrons will be encouraged to abstain from animal proteins one day a week.

Meatless Monday is a worldwide movement in which advocates forgo meat each Monday out of respect for animals, the environment and their own health.

The STAR Health Sciences Complex hosted its first nutritious cook-off this spring, attracting more than 500 attendees, says Michael Smith, director of Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships.

“People are focused more than ever on health and wellness, and it was clear that this event resonated with the public,” he says. “Based on its success this will definitely be one of our signature events.”

Eight restaurants vied for top honors in three categories. The winners: Home Grown Café for creativity; Bistro at the Courtyard Marriott for taste; and Santa Fe Mexican Grill for presentation.
