Joe represents the best of politics. My brother’s gift is that he appeals to the better instincts of human nature. He’s not a divisive leader; he understands that principled compromise is how democracy works. Joe is defined not by his job, but by his character. He abhors the abuse of power, and has always challenged injustice. Bullies come in the form of individuals, institutions and nations. Joe has never wavered in his commitment to stand up to them. There is no daylight between the private man and public persona. His actions over the course of his life give the measure of the man. It is this genuineness that people relate to. He speaks the truth, and he’s an even better listener. You can take the man out of Delaware, but you can’t take Delaware out of the man.
