To think about Rehoboth’s vibrant restaurant scene without The Back Porch is impossible. Opening in 1974, the three original partners (Libby, Ted and Victor) could never have imagined that their endeavor would break the beach-food mold and pave the way for other Rehoboth Beach restaurateurs for the next 35-plus years. I was a Back Porch regular in my early years—way before I could appreciate the fantastic food or the welcoming atmosphere. My parents’ good friends, Ted and Libby Fisher, were two of the original owners. A day-trip down from Milford to hit the sand and surf ended with a banana smoothie on the back porch—although I’m guessing the adults were enjoying something with a little more heft. Over the years, the crew at The Back Porch has successfully welcomed new partners as others moved on—a feat in itself—and consistently exceeded the expectations of their guests. To experience a flaming coffee on their upstairs deck during a warm summer night is pretty much the best of Rehoboth Beach.
