With such smiling volunteers as Crystal Jordan of Clayton setting the tone at the registration desk, there was no way the 2012 Southern Delaware Go Red for Women Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Dover Sheraton could have been anything but a blast. The annual fundraiser and awareness-building event has become one of the events of the year. “It’s all about getting all the women together to share their experiences,” said Jordan, dressed all in red. “Plus, women and shopping go hand in hand.”

Erin Tinsley of Bel Boutique in Dover rocked a long-sleeved red-and-gray drape-neck dress by Missoni and offered this surprising bit of fashion info: “Red can be a neutral when it comes to fashion. You can add a red bag or belt for a pop of color with anything gold, black, brown, silver…” Tell that to Tara Greathouse of Middletown. Mrs. Delaware America cut quite the figure in a full-length red ball gown with a sequined top sponsored by Claire’s Fashions in Wilmington. “My grandfather passed away from heart disease,” Greathouse said, “so I want to reach out to others and help.” Nearby stood LaVar Johnson of Philly, a recent graduate of the textiles and apparel studies program at Delaware State University. Johnson designed a dress for the fashion show. Hovering close were proud parents Calvin and Diana Johnson, as well as DSU apparel pals Velece Baxter and Jasmine Williams. While most proclaimed red as their favorite color—at least for the day (just prior to Valentine’s Day)—the ever-vivacious Tonda Parks of Dover veered happily from the crowd. “My favorite color is leopard,” Parks laughed. “Even my grandkids think leopard is a color.” Just the same, Parks rocked a red ruffled dress—even red specs—over knee-high black boots. Parks is locked in a five-way race for honorary mayor of Central Delaware, so it was a good time to razz opponent Stephanie Turner of Dover as Parks greeted pals Trish Rodriguez and Sher Valenzuela of Dover. “It’s the whipper snapper trying to upset the old guard,” Parks laughed.
