Behind every successful woman, there’s a messy closet, a bad hair day and sequined jacket with shoulder pads from the ’80s. JoJami Tyler and Deborah Boland of www.fabulousafter40.com are at their service. The duo, with Carroll Laurence, arranged the makeovers on these pages. The style mavens have come to the rescue of many women trying to balance work, style and family. “I really love to work with women,” Tyler says. “Some need help when they get stuck in a rut, so my goal is to keep them looking good.” Tyler specializes in fashion tips, closet design and personal presentation. “Your wardrobe is all about you, so it has to be unique and it has to make you feel good.” Among her personal style staples are scarves, a tube of lipstick and Spanx shapewear. The makeovers in this issue are Tyler’s efforts to reintroduce women to their feminine sides and to spend more time on themselves. The results, she says, need no explanation.“Look at their beautiful smiles,” she says. “Their self-confidence has come back, and they’re such beautiful ladies.”

Joelle Norwood, 54, of Rehoboth Beach is a TV director and producer who owns her own production company in Washington, D.C., Air Waves Inc., whose clients include “Entertainment Tonight” and “Rachael Ray.” Joelle is always on the run, so she wanted a look that was new but simple. Thé Medspa in Lewes gave Joelle an easy, beautiful new look. Stylist Kyla McIlvaine gave Joelle a cut she called “a modern twist to the graduated bob,” to create a slimming look. McIlvaine used four shades of brown and highlighted the hair around Joelle’s face to add dimension. Stylist Karen Smith wanted Joelle to look youthful and natural without using much makeup, so she chose light, peachy tones to create a natural effect. She applied brown shades to Joelle’s eyes and added white to her eyelids. Joelle also underwent spa treatments with Botox to make her look well rested and youthful. Joelle’s clothing and jewelry are from Carltons Mens and Ladies Apparel in Rehoboth Beach.

For Stephanie Mason, 31, of Newark, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, combat boots and camouflage did little to enhance her petite frame and beautiful skin tone. Donning sweat clothes and an Army-issue haircut was enough for the Mason family to stage an intervention. “I had just come back from Kuwait and didn’t know until the day of the makeover what was going on,” Stephanie says. With her stepsister’s wedding coming, Stephanie wanted to hang on to as much hair as possible. “She wanted to look like a girl,” says stylist Denise Mackrell of Joseph Anthony Retreat Spa and Salon in Concordville, Pennsylvania. “She has a beautiful oval face shape and great skin tone, so we added rich color to give her some movement.” Makeup artist Michelle Klinger swept plum hues across her eyelids to bring out her “big, beautiful green eyes” and layered on black mascara for a feminine, flirty look. A hint of bronzer brought out the warmth in Stephanie’s skin to give her an all-over glow. “My family always said I was a pretty girl, but I knew I didn’t look like it,” Mason says. “Now I finally do.” Stephanie’s wardrobe comes from Flirt in Wilmington.

Laura DayAfter photograph by Luigi CiuffetelliBefore photograph by Luigi Ciuffetelli

For Laura Day, 35, of Newark, style had taken a back seat to hectic schedules at home and work. “I neglect myself, I’m always working, I have two kids, and I’d rather put the $100 for a haircut and makeup away for my kids’ college educations,” she says. So she received a flattering new ’do from Elayne James Salon in Greenville. “We gave her bangs for a more youthful look and they also frame her face really well,” stylist Jenn Stein says. Layers were cut to give movement. Warm highlights were added to compliment Laura’s skin tone. Colorist Jessica Barbato from the Elayne James Salon in Middletown used piecey highlights that would blend well, even after the hair has grown out. To bring out Day’s features, Laura Mercier cosmetics were applied to her cheeks, lips and eyes. “We really wanted to give her a fresh, pretty, everyday look that would brighten her face,” says Christi Miller, owner of Houppette boutique in Greenville. Though her physical transformation is dramatic, the emotional effects are sure to be long lasting. “I learned to slow down and take time for myself because I knew I really needed it,” Laura says. Her wardrobe is from Lady’s Image in Wilmington.

Jackie Ivy, 38, is an architect from Wilmington. She is also co-founder of onebravechick.com and mother to two adopted children, so finding the time to keep her look up to date has been a challenge. Stylists at the Salon Pasca in Wilmington gave Jackie a chic new look that complements her creative career and personality. Stylist Natasha Latina added long blonde extensions to Jackie’s former short bob, allowing her to feel the hair below her shoulders. Latina used a darker blonde underneath and bleached the top to create a contrast and add body to Jackie’s fine, silky hair. Stylist Rebecca Reed-Old applied GLO mineral makeup to make her skin appear smoother and younger. She used light, summery colors to match Jackie’s outfit and hair. Jackie’s clothing, jewelry and Kare James handbag came from Ellie Boutique in Greenville. The most shocking, but wonderful, change for Jackie was her hair. “It took me a good two or three days to realize it was me,” she says. “I felt out of my skin.”

Plus facials and “manis.” Men, you don’t have to go metro to enjoy the salon. Here are a few just for you.

Feeling secure in your manhood, but still looking for a little pampering? “Men are paying more attention to themselves and attitudes are changing because men have to sell themselves in their industries,” says Jeffrey Straub, business director for Bad Hair Day? Herein, male-oriented salons that offer nail care, facials, massage—even a paraffin waxing. Don’t worry. You can still get a basic haircut, too.
Studio One Eleven Salon & Day Spa for Men (111 W. 11th St., Wilmington, 225-8365) is the only spa in the Wilmington area that offers a straight razor shave, including pre-shave oil, hot towel, light facial massage and after-shave treatment. On one recent Sunday, five members of a groom’s party took full advantage. “If I weren’t the groom, I wouldn’t have thought to get it done,” says Eric Landis, of Media, Pennsylvania. “I guess it’s more acceptable if you’re a girl, but, I have to admit, it’s nice.” The salon also gives haircuts, beard and mustache trims, waxing, facials, complimentary chair massages, as well as wine and cheese nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And how many salons boast a miniature putting green?
Since 2002, Philly staple Style of Man (1007 N. Orange St., Wilmington, 984-1902) has helped Wilmington men revamp and redo. Owner Kathy Thomas says the days of the barbershop are done, but you can get one thing at Style of Man that you can’t have done at a salon: straight-razor cuts and shaves. Only barbers—not cosmetologists—are licensed to perform the service.
When a man gets his first pedicure, he may feel a little insecure. So to promote relaxation, Kaytie Soyka, manager of the boardwalk location of Bad Hair Day? (17314 North Village Main Blvd., The Villages of Five Points, Lewes, 644-4247; 46 Lake Ave., Rehoboth Beach, 226-4247; 101 N. Boardwalk in the Atlantic Sands Hotel, Rehoboth Beach, 227-7263), hands him a Dogfish Head ale and a magazine. It usually does the trick. “Sometimes they come in with their heads down,” Soyka says. “Once they sit down and realize they don’t have to put pink nail polish on their toes, they’re OK. You’re taking away their calluses, cleaning their toes, cutting their toenails and giving them a great massage.” Facials are also available.
You won’t find nail care or facials at Janaids, The Salon for Men (331 W. Loockerman St., Dover, 736-0508), but it does offer texturizers, haircuts and dye jobs. “A lot of guys go for it. It’s the norm now,” says owner Janaid Kareem. Before they would whisper for a dye, and we’d take them to a private room. Now they do it right on the main floor while talking about the football game.” —Michele Besso

Future salon professionals offer a full range of services at Paul Mitchell partner schools.Cutting Prices

It doesn’t take a whole lot of money to get great hair. Students and their teachers are ready to help.

So $35 for a mere cut at the salon seems steep these days, and you don’t quite care for the high-volume bargain cutteries. There are alternatives. Cosmetology and beauty academies offer cuts, colors and, most important, low prices. Unsure about entrusting your tresses to a student? Remember: They work under the supervision of pros.
The Delaware Academy (1420 Pulaski Hwy., Newark, 832-8418) is a Paul Mitchell partner school that offers full salon amenities performed by future professionals. Haircuts start at $10, coloring at $25. The academy even offers super conditioning treatments, and a T3 experience ($10 and $12, respectively). Walk-ins are welcome Tuesday through Friday. Appointments recommended on Saturdays.
The Delaware Learning Institute of Cosmetology (U.S. 113 Box 144D, Dagsboro, 732-6704) is a full-service salon open to the public Tuesday through Friday. There’s no need to make an appointment here, as they take walk-ins only.  Haircuts start at $7, coloring at $23, and chemical services such as perms start at $28.
Pressley Beauty Academy Inc. (1487 S. Governors Ave., Dover, 734-9853) offers shampoo, cut and style for—ready?—only $15. Chemical services start at $30. This Kent County classic is open Monday through Friday.
Schilling Douglas School of Hair Design (70 Amstel Ave., Newark, 737-5100) is the place if you’re looking for experience. The establishment just celebrated its 30th year in cosmetology education—and some of its staff has been there from the start.  Walk-ins only are welcomed Monday through Saturday. A bonus: Unlike most beauty schools, which are open only during the day, Schilling Douglas has evening hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Haircuts, including shampoo and blow dry, are only $8.50, and color services start around $30.  —Deanna Candeloro
