“School nurses are independent practitioners with the unique challenge of being a health care provider in a non-health care setting. The school nurse has a foot in both the health care and the education communities. We are charged with providing for the health care needs of diverse student populations. We help students develop self-care skills related to chronic health conditions, like asthma and diabetes. School nurses take advantage of every student encounter to reinforce good health behaviors, providing health education as well as direct care. And students with special needs have a school nurse to assist them with removing barriers and integrating into the school setting.”
