In honor of the 375th anniversary of the founding of New Sweden, the New Sweden Alliance and its members are hosting a number of celebratory events, from musical performances to lectures to exhibits.
The high point will be the May 11 visit of King Carl XVI and Queen Silvia of Sweden and Speaker of the Parliament of Finland Eero Olavi Heinäluoma.
Here is a sampling of what to expect in Delaware, but there are also activities in the Philadelphia area as well. More will be added during the year. (375th.org)
May 9 As part of the Kalmar Nyckel’s 2013 lecture series, the foundation will present a lecture on the royal warship Kronan, which sailed in the heyday of Sweden’s maritime empire. Presenter Lars Einarsson is also part of the delegation representing Kalmar, Sweden, which will visit Delaware for the 50th anniversary of the Sister Cities International Program between Kalmar and Wilmington.
- May 8-12 Sister Cities Mayoral Delegation Events | Wilmington is a sister city to Kalmar, Sweden, along with Watford, England; Fulda, Germany; Osogbo, Nigeria; Olevano sul Tusciano, Italy; and Nemours, France.
- May 11 Visit of the king and queen of Sweden and international dignitaries
- June 4 Dedication of Crane Hook Monument, which last September was moved to Old Swedes Church
- Nov. 8-10 “Encountering ‘Others’ in the Atlantic World,” the New Sweden 375th Anniversary Conference at Clayton Hall at the University of Delaware. The event includes a live video feed from the University of Lund in Sweden
