Mary Dupont
Lewes
Director of Financial Empowerment, State of Delaware
Most people associate the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services with public benefits, but an important part of its mission is to increase self-sufficiency. Dupont runs a statewide initiative called Stand By Me, a joint project of the state and United Way of Delaware to increase personal financial security for all Delawareans. She came to the job after working with Jack Markell on financial empowerment projects when he was still state treasurer, and the work became his priority when he became governor. “I would like to see financial empowerment become a priority for governors, business leaders, and educators throughout America,” Dupont says. “I hope to be able replicate our work in Delaware to increase financial security for all Americans.”
