Telemedicine makes virtual care available anywhere.

It’s 8:30 on a Tuesday night. That cold you’ve been fighting has turned into a full-blown sinus infection. The kids are getting ready for bed, so you can’t drag them to the ER while you wait to be seen. And tomorrow’s carpool duties and early meetings mean no time for a pre-work doctor’s appointment. Fortunately, there’s another option: Seeing a doctor on your time, any time.

Delaware Health Information Network (DHIN), our state’s health information exchange, has connected with MDLIVE to provide easy access to its telemedicine program, bringing the doctor to your computer, tablet or phone, in real time—and for a monthly subscription fee that costs less than a copay for an ER visit.

“For common, non-emergent ailments like sinus or urinary tract infections, this can be a convenient and appropriate alternative to an emergency room visit,” explains Stacey Haddock Schiller, director of marketing for DHIN. “You can speak with a Delaware Board-licensed physician from the privacy of your home or office, without a visit to a crowded ER or the associated high copay.”

For basic, non-emergent needs, like a fever or ear infection, an MDLIVE physician will review your symptoms and, if applicable, submit a prescription electronically to your pharmacy.

“We know that a major point of stress for parents is making the decision to take a child to the ER in the middle of the night,” Schiller says. “With MDLIVE, you can check in with a Delaware-licensed doctor for an opinion before you leave the house.”

The nation’s first statewide health information exchange, DHIN recently launched www.dhin24seven.org, a website that offers a wide array of health and wellness news and resources, including additional information about MDLIVE’s telemedicine program.

Through DHIN’s secure Community Health Record, physicians’ offices, hospitals, labs and imaging facilities share clinical information safely and effectively. Every acute care hospital in the state and nearly all Delaware physicians participate, ensuring the timely delivery of test results and records to speed your medical care while saving you money and time.
