Delaware is underserved, medically speaking. Brintha Vasagar, M.D., is looking to change that. Vasagar and Bayhealth Medical Group will soon infuse the region with not just a new practice but also a new residency program, both slated to launch in 2021. “Physicians are much more likely to stay and practice within 50 miles of where they do their residency,” explains Vasagar.

With a physician shortage—there’s fewer than 1 doctor per 2,000 people in Kent and Sussex counties, she says—paired with no in-state medical school, “this is all part of this strategic plan to increase the flow of physicians to central and southern Delaware.”

A family medicine practitioner, Vasagar is working to shape a program that will create top-notch doctors who also serve as advocates for their patients. When it launches in July, the three-year program will have eight residents, and 24 when at full capacity.

Paired with Bayhealth’s forthcoming family medicine practice, Vasagar anticipates adding over 30,000 visits a year to the area, focusing on mental health and addiction medicine. “We’re really just trying to expand the ideas of how do we deliver health care in a way that’s meaningful and that meets the needs of these patient populations.”
