From Jay-Z to Justin Timberlake, Kaisha Blackstone has worked with the music industry’s biggest stars. With her husband Adam, Blackstone owns BASSic Black Entertainment, a Middletown-based production company that specializes in live music events.

They provide musicians, singers, dancers and production experts for a long list of A-listers. The Blackstones helped produce Volume 2 of Rihanna’s Fenty fashion show and the Jennifer Lopez–Shakira Super Bowl halftime extravaganza, which was nominated for five Primetime Emmy awards, including best music direction. “We consider ourselves connectors—the people who established artists and sometimes new artists come to when they want to take their music on the road,” Blackstone says.

She’s a musician in her own right; she was a background singer for many years, touring with Demi Lovato, Vivian Green and Mike Posner. But she has learned that saying no is one of the keys to success. “You will have to decline some opportunities that don’t fit your goals and you should do so guilt-free and without apologizing for it,” Blackstone says. “Your time is valuable, your brand is valuable, and if you are in business for yourself, you are your biggest asset.”
