Giving back is of the utmost importance to Vernita Dorsey. A longtime member of Delaware’s banking community—she launched her career at Wilmington Trust—Dorsey is charitable through her church and volunteering, but also through her role at WSFS, where she leads initiatives to better the communities the bank serves, through its foundations, its associate volunteer programs and corporate giving.

Via Team WSFS, bank associates have ample opportunities to help their communities. Last year, associates logged an impressive 15,000-plus volunteer hours giving back, and, despite a pandemic, they were eager to continue that work. That included creative volunteering for their usual efforts with Meals on Wheels, plus new endeavors like sewing face masks and making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless.

They even wrote notes for those who were more isolated in the community, “just to say somebody is thinking about you, somebody loves you, you’re not alone,” Dorsey says. With so many people impacted this year, the bank pivoted to meet the needs of those affected by COVID-19. One initiative was focused on providing schoolchildren with technology to access virtual classes. Helping shore up small businesses, WSFS also began offering microgrants predominantly to women and minority-owned businesses. “I think it’s a commendable thing to be able to give back, even if you don’t have a lot to give back.”
